Radiation Safety and Ionising Source Management

Industrial radiography, nuclear density gauges, borehole logging tools and medical imaging all rely on ionising sources that demand strict control. This course covers the principles of radiation protection, source security, dose monitoring and emergency response for organisations using sealed and unsealed sources. Case material is drawn from mining, non-destructive testing, oil and gas and hospital settings operating across the region.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the biological effects of ionising radiation and the principles of protection.
  • Apply time, distance and shielding to keep doses as low as reasonably achievable.
  • Manage the security, transport and storage of radioactive sources.
  • Set up dose monitoring using personal dosimeters and area surveys.
  • Establish controlled and supervised areas with appropriate signage and access.
  • Plan and rehearse the response to a lost source or overexposure event.
