Process Safety Management for Hazardous Materials

Facilities that store, blend or process flammable liquids, gases and hazardous chemicals face a different order of risk than routine occupational hazards, and a single process safety failure can end a plant. This course covers hazard and operability studies, layers of protection analysis, management of change and the safety instrumented systems that keep hazardous processes inside safe operating limits.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the difference between occupational safety and process safety in hazardous facilities.
  • Facilitate or contribute effectively to a hazard and operability study for a process unit.
  • Apply layers of protection analysis to justify safeguards against a defined process hazard.
  • Manage a change to plant, procedure or personnel through a formal management of change process.
  • Describe the role of safety instrumented systems in maintaining safe operating limits.
  • Investigate a process safety incident using barrier and bow tie analysis techniques.
