Powered Hand Tools and Abrasive Wheel Safety

Angle grinders, drills and cut off saws are among the most widely used and most abused tools in African workshops, where guards are removed, wrong discs are fitted and wheels burst at speed. This course teaches safe selection, mounting and use of powered hand tools with a focus on abrasive wheels. Practical sessions cover disc matching, wheel mounting and the inspection habits that prevent shattered discs and kickback injuries.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the hazards of powered hand tools including kickback, entanglement and disc failure.
  • Match abrasive discs and wheels to the tool speed and the material being worked.
  • Mount and dress abrasive wheels correctly and check for cracks before use.
  • Inspect powered hand tools, guards and electrical leads before each use.
  • Apply safe operating positions and personal protective equipment for grinding and cutting.
  • Control sparks, dust and noise generated by powered tool work.
