Port and Stevedoring Safety Management

The container terminals and bulk quays of Durban, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam and Walvis Bay run around the clock where cranes, straddle carriers, vehicles and gangs of workers share tight space alongside deep water. This course addresses the distinctive safety risks of cargo handling and stevedoring, from load integrity to quayside traffic and fall from height into holds. It equips supervisors to keep the interface between ship, shore and machine under control.

What you will be able to do

  • Map the hazards of ship, quay and yard cargo handling operations.
  • Control lifting, slinging and load integrity during cargo transfer.
  • Separate people from cranes, straddle carriers and terminal traffic.
  • Manage access, falls into holds and work over water.
  • Coordinate safe interface between vessel crew and shore gangs.
  • Establish emergency response for man overboard and cargo incidents.
