Noise Management and Hearing Conservation Programmes

Noise induced hearing loss is one of the most common and most compensated occupational diseases in South African industry, yet it is entirely preventable. This course shows how to measure workplace noise, interpret the results against exposure limits, and build a hearing conservation programme that combines engineering controls, hearing protection and audiometric testing. It is aimed at noisy environments such as mining, manufacturing, workshops and power generation.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how noise damages hearing and why the loss is permanent and preventable.
  • Conduct basic noise surveys and interpret readings against occupational exposure limits.
  • Prioritise engineering and administrative controls before relying on hearing protection.
  • Select hearing protection with the correct attenuation for the measured noise levels.
  • Set up an audiometric testing programme and act on early signs of hearing shift.
  • Compile the records needed to demonstrate a functioning hearing conservation programme.
