Mine Health and Safety Act Compliance

The Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 carries its own risk assessment, code of practice and reporting regime distinct from general industry legislation, and mines that treat the two as interchangeable expose managers to personal liability. This course works through mandatory codes of practice, the duties of the manager and the reporting obligations that follow a section 54 or 55 instruction.

What you will be able to do

  • Interpret the general duties and structure set out in the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996.
  • Draft or review a mandatory code of practice that meets the requirements of the regulations.
  • Explain the appointment and duties of the manager and other statutory appointees under the Act.
  • Respond correctly to a section 54 or section 55 instruction issued by an inspector.
  • Apply the reporting and investigation requirements for mine incidents and occurrences.
  • Prepare documentation for a Mine Health and Safety Council or Department of Mineral Resources audit.
