Local Exhaust Ventilation and Dust Extraction Management

Extraction hoods and dust collectors are installed to capture fumes and dust at source, but on many sites they run at reduced flow, are ducted badly or are simply switched off. This course covers how local exhaust ventilation works, how to check that it is actually capturing contaminants and how to keep it performing over time. Examples draw on welding bays, woodworking shops, laboratories and process areas common in the region.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how local exhaust ventilation captures dust, fume and vapour at source.
  • Assess hood placement, capture velocity and duct design against the contaminant.
  • Carry out simple performance checks that reveal a failing extraction system.
  • Plan inspection, cleaning and filter maintenance schedules for extraction equipment.
  • Recognise when engineering controls must be backed up by respiratory protection.
  • Keep ventilation records that support occupational hygiene monitoring.
