Lithium Battery Storage and Fire Safety Management

Solar backup banks, electric forklifts, phones, tools and electric vehicles have filled African warehouses, offices and homes with lithium batteries that can vent, ignite and reignite in ways ordinary fire plans do not anticipate. This course prepares organisations for the thermal runaway risk these batteries carry. It covers safe storage and charging, early warning, and a response that keeps people away from toxic and self sustaining fires.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain thermal runaway and why lithium battery fires behave differently.
  • Identify battery risks in storage, charging, transport and end of life.
  • Set safe storage, separation and charging arrangements for batteries.
  • Recognise early warning signs of a failing battery or cell.
  • Plan a fire response that protects people from toxic fume and reignition.
  • Manage damaged, swollen and waste batteries safely.
