Legionella Control and Water Hygiene Management

Cooling towers, hot water systems, spas and stored water in African hotels, hospitals and office towers can breed Legionella bacteria that cause severe and sometimes fatal pneumonia when aerosols are inhaled. This course builds a practical water hygiene programme to keep these systems under control. Participants learn to assess systems, set temperature and treatment regimes, and prove the risk is being managed.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how Legionella grows and reaches people through water systems.
  • Identify the cooling towers, calorifiers and stored water most at risk.
  • Conduct a water system risk assessment and asset schematic.
  • Set temperature, treatment and flushing regimes that control bacteria.
  • Plan sampling, monitoring and record keeping to prove control.
  • Assign responsibilities and respond when results exceed action levels.
