Legal Safety Appointments and Duties of the Responsible Person

Safety responsibilities are often signed onto an appointment letter that the appointee never fully understands, leaving individuals personally exposed when things go wrong. This course clarifies what a legal appointment actually requires, the duties that come with it and how appointees should discharge and record their responsibilities. It works through the appointment structures used on South African industrial, construction and mining sites.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the purpose of legal appointments and how responsibility flows down.
  • Distinguish the duties attached to the main workplace appointment roles.
  • Interpret an appointment letter and understand its practical obligations.
  • Carry out and document the inspections and controls the role demands.
  • Recognise personal liability and the limits of an appointee's authority.
  • Manage handovers, acting arrangements and the withdrawal of appointments.
