Ladder and Portable Access Equipment Safety

Ladders and step platforms cause a steady stream of injuries precisely because they are treated as too simple to need training, and workers overreach, use damaged stiles or set up on uneven ground. This course covers selecting, inspecting and using ladders, stepladders and mobile platforms for short duration work at height. Examples reflect the mix of timber, aluminium and fibreglass access equipment found across offices, warehouses and maintenance workshops.

What you will be able to do

  • Select the right ladder or portable platform for the task and duration of work.
  • Inspect ladders and access equipment and remove defective items from service.
  • Set up ladders at safe angles on stable ground with correct footing and tying off.
  • Recognise when a ladder is the wrong choice and a platform is needed instead.
  • Apply safe climbing, positioning and load rules during short duration work.
  • Store and maintain portable access equipment to extend its safe life.
