Laboratory Health and Safety and Chemical Hygiene

University, clinical, water testing and industrial laboratories across Africa handle flammables, corrosives, compressed gases and pathogens in confined bench spaces where a single lapse can injure several people at once. This course builds a practical chemical hygiene and laboratory safety programme covering fume cupboards, storage segregation, waste streams and emergency response. It is written for the person who has to make the lab safe day to day, not just pass an inspection.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess the chemical, biological and physical hazards present in a working laboratory.
  • Design chemical storage and segregation that prevents dangerous reactions.
  • Verify fume cupboard, ventilation and eyewash performance against safe standards.
  • Establish safe practice for compressed gases, cryogenics and sharps.
  • Set up laboratory waste streams for chemical, biological and sharps disposal.
  • Prepare spill response and emergency procedures suited to bench scale incidents.
