Inventory Costing and Stock Valuation for Finance Teams

For retailers, manufacturers and distributors, inventory is often the largest and most manipulated number on the balance sheet. This course equips finance staff to cost and value stock correctly, choose the right valuation method and account for obsolescence, shrinkage and write downs. Participants learn to keep stock records that reconcile to the ledger and withstand audit and management scrutiny.

What you will be able to do

  • Distinguish inventory costing methods including FIFO, weighted average and standard cost.
  • Value stock at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
  • Account for obsolescence, shrinkage, damage and write downs.
  • Reconcile physical stock counts to accounting records.
  • Assess the impact of stock valuation on profit and tax.
  • Strengthen controls over stock movements and valuation adjustments.
