Hydrogen Sulphide Awareness and Atmospheric Gas Monitoring

Sewage works, tanneries, pulp plants and sour gas operations across the continent expose workers to hydrogen sulphide, a gas that deadens the sense of smell before it kills. This course covers how the gas behaves, how to read fixed and portable detectors correctly and how to build an atmospheric monitoring routine that catches oxygen deficiency and toxic build up before entry. Drills use realistic alarm scenarios so teams practise responding rather than freezing.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the health effects of hydrogen sulphide and the concentrations at which they occur.
  • Operate portable and fixed gas detectors and interpret oxygen, flammable and toxic readings.
  • Bump test and calibrate detection equipment and keep defensible records.
  • Design an atmospheric monitoring routine for tanks, sumps and process areas.
  • Set alarm levels and escape triggers appropriate to the work being done.
  • Coordinate rescue and first response for a gas exposure casualty.
