Hot Work, Welding and Gas Cutting Safety

Welding, grinding and gas cutting start fires long after the job is finished, often through sparks that smoulder in hidden combustibles until the crew has left the area. This course covers hot work permits, fire watch duties, fume and gas hazards and the safe use of oxy-fuel and arc equipment. Delegates practise setting up a hot work zone and completing the checks that prevent the fires that regularly damage plants and warehouses.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the fire, fume, electrical and gas hazards created by hot work.
  • Prepare a hot work area by removing, shielding or wetting down combustibles.
  • Complete and control a hot work permit and assign a competent fire watch.
  • Handle oxy-fuel sets, cylinders and flashback arrestors safely.
  • Control welding fume and provide adequate ventilation for the task.
  • Carry out post-work fire monitoring before the area is left unattended.
