High Voltage Switching and Substation Safety

Mines, factories, hospitals and municipalities across the region operate their own high voltage substations and reticulation, where switching errors, arc flash and induced voltages kill experienced people in an instant. This course develops the discipline behind safe high voltage work, covering switching procedures, permits, earthing and arc flash protection. It is aimed at those who authorise and supervise the work as well as those who carry it out.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain high voltage hazards including shock, arc flash and induced voltage.
  • Apply switching procedures, sequencing and confirmation for reliable isolation.
  • Operate a permit and authorisation system for high voltage work.
  • Verify safe isolation, earthing and test before touch practice.
  • Assess arc flash energy and specify protective clothing and boundaries.
  • Plan substation access, maintenance and emergency response.
