Heat Stress and Thermal Comfort Management

Deep-level mines, foundries, bakeries and outdoor work in the African summer push workers into heat conditions that cause collapse and, in severe cases, death. This course covers how the body responds to heat, how to assess thermal conditions and how to protect workers through acclimatisation, work-rest cycles and hydration. Practical controls are matched to both hot industrial environments and outdoor work under a high sun.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how heat stress develops and progresses to heat illness.
  • Assess thermal conditions using recognised heat stress indices.
  • Design work-rest cycles and acclimatisation for hot conditions.
  • Manage hydration, shade and cooling for indoor and outdoor work.
  • Recognise heat illness early and apply the correct first response.
  • Adjust work arrangements during heatwaves and high-risk periods.
