Health and Safety in the Agricultural Sector

Farming exposes workers to tractors, machinery, pesticides, livestock and long hours in the sun, and it remains one of the most hazardous sectors while often lacking formal safety systems. This course brings practical health and safety to commercial farms, packhouses and agri-processing operations. It addresses the seasonal, rural and multilingual realities of African agriculture, from tractor overturns to chemical handling and heat exposure.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the major hazards across farming, packing and agri-processing tasks.
  • Control tractor, implement and mobile machinery risks including overturns.
  • Manage pesticide storage, mixing, application and re-entry safely.
  • Address livestock handling, manual work and repetitive strain injuries.
  • Protect seasonal and migrant workers with induction and supervision.
  • Build a simple, practical safety system suited to a farming operation.
