Hazardous Chemical Substances, GHS Labelling and Storage

Many workplaces store drums and containers of cleaning agents, solvents and process chemicals with faded labels and no idea what will happen if two of them mix. This course demystifies the Globally Harmonised System of classification and labelling, teaches delegates to read and act on a safety data sheet, and sets out segregation and storage rules that prevent fires, toxic releases and dangerous reactions. It is built around the mixed chemical stores found in manufacturing, agriculture, cleaning services and laboratories.

What you will be able to do

  • Interpret Globally Harmonised System pictograms, hazard statements and precautionary statements.
  • Read a safety data sheet and extract the handling, storage and first aid information that matters.
  • Classify chemical hazards and identify incompatible substances that must be separated.
  • Design compliant chemical storage with correct segregation, bunding and ventilation.
  • Select personal protective equipment and controls suited to specific chemical exposures.
  • Prepare for and respond to a chemical spill or accidental release.
