Fire Risk Assessment and Emergency Preparedness

Fires in warehouses, mines and manufacturing plants across the region routinely trace back to a fire risk assessment that was filed rather than acted on. This course works through fuel load surveys, means of escape audits, fire equipment maintenance schedules and evacuation drills, using the layouts of typical South African industrial and commercial premises as working examples.

What you will be able to do

  • Conduct a structured fire risk assessment covering ignition sources, fuel loads and means of escape.
  • Evaluate fire detection, suppression and portable equipment against occupancy risk and maintenance records.
  • Design evacuation procedures and assembly point arrangements suited to the site's layout and shift patterns.
  • Plan and run a fire drill that produces measurable evacuation times rather than a tick box exercise.
  • Coordinate with municipal fire services and local emergency responders before an incident occurs.
  • Compile a fire safety file that supports insurance requirements and landlord or client audits.
