Financial Risk Management and Hedging with Derivatives

Currency swings, interest rate shifts and commodity price shocks can wipe out margins for African businesses that import inputs or borrow in foreign currency. This course gives finance teams a structured way to identify financial exposures and use forwards, futures, options and swaps to hedge them prudently. Participants learn to build a hedging policy that protects the business without introducing speculative risk.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify and quantify currency, interest rate and commodity exposures.
  • Explain how forwards, futures, options and swaps transfer risk.
  • Select suitable hedging instruments for specific business exposures.
  • Calculate hedge ratios and measure hedge effectiveness.
  • Design a hedging policy with clear mandates and limits.
  • Account for hedges and disclose them under relevant standards.
