Fatigue and Shift Work Safety Management

Continuous operations in mining, manufacturing, healthcare and transport run on shift patterns that steadily erode alertness and drive errors and incidents. This course treats fatigue as a hazard to be managed rather than a personal failing, covering shift design, workload, rest and monitoring. Delegates learn to build a fatigue risk management approach suited to twelve-hour shifts and long commutes common on African operations.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how fatigue develops and how it degrades safety performance.
  • Assess shift patterns, overtime and workload for fatigue risk.
  • Design rosters and rest arrangements that reduce accumulated fatigue.
  • Apply practical controls for high-risk periods such as night shifts.
  • Introduce fatigue reporting and monitoring without blame.
  • Address commuting, sleep and lifestyle factors that affect alertness.
