Explosives Handling and Blasting Safety for Mining Operations

Blasting drives production in the region's mines and quarries, but misfires, premature detonation, flyrock and fume expose crews and neighbours to catastrophic risk. This course builds a safety focused understanding of explosives storage, transport, charging and firing for those managing blasting operations. It concentrates on the controls and discipline that keep people clear and account for every charge.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe explosives types, initiation systems and their hazards.
  • Apply safe storage, magazine and transport controls for explosives.
  • Manage charging, tie up and firing procedures to prevent premature initiation.
  • Control flyrock, ground vibration, air blast and fume around the blast.
  • Handle misfires and unaccounted charges through a disciplined procedure.
  • Plan blast exclusion zones, warnings and re entry checks.
