Excavation Near Existing Services and Utility Location Management

Striking a buried cable, pipe or main during excavation causes injuries, outages and heavy liabilities that a little planning would have avoided. This course covers locating existing services, planning safe excavation near them and managing the risk of underground strikes. It reflects African urban and industrial sites where service records are often incomplete and utilities are congested.

What you will be able to do

  • Gather and interpret records of buried services before digging.
  • Use location methods and safe digging practices near services.
  • Plan excavations to protect existing utilities and workers.
  • Apply permits, wayleaves and utility approvals correctly.
  • Supervise hand digging, trial holes and exposure of services.
  • Respond to service strikes and near miss incidents.
