Crane, Rigging and Lifting Operations Safety

Dropped loads and overturned cranes cause some of the most serious incidents on construction, mining and heavy industrial sites, yet most are the result of a poorly planned lift rather than equipment failure. This course covers safe lifting principles, sling and shackle selection, load calculation and the appointment of competent riggers and lift supervisors. Delegates learn to develop a lift plan for both routine and complex lifts using site conditions typical of South African projects.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the principles of safe lifting and the causes of common lifting incidents.
  • Select and inspect slings, shackles, chains and other lifting tackle before use.
  • Calculate load weights, centres of gravity and sling angles for a planned lift.
  • Develop a lift plan that assigns competent riggers, signallers and a lift supervisor.
  • Assess ground conditions, exclusion zones and overhead hazards around the lift.
  • Inspect and maintain lifting equipment records to keep gear in service safely.
