Confined Space Rescue and Standby Attendant Duties

Most confined space fatalities are would be rescuers who rushed in without a plan, which is why the standby attendant and rescue arrangements matter as much as the entry itself. This course focuses on the attendant role, retrieval systems and the practical steps of recovering a casualty from a tank, silo or manhole without adding to the body count. Exercises use retrieval tripods, harnesses and communication drills so attendants build muscle memory.

What you will be able to do

  • Define the legal and practical duties of the confined space standby attendant.
  • Set up retrieval systems including tripods, winches and full body harnesses.
  • Recognise when to raise the alarm and when a non entry rescue is possible.
  • Coordinate a rescue with internal teams and municipal emergency services.
  • Manage communication and headcount between entrants and the attendant.
  • Review and rehearse the rescue plan before every high risk entry.
