Concrete Technology and Structural Construction Methods

This course develops a working understanding of concrete technology and modern structural construction methods used on South African building and civil projects. Participants examine mix design principles, reinforcement detailing, formwork systems, curing regimes and common defects, alongside an introduction to precast and post tensioned construction, equipping technical staff to specify, inspect and troubleshoot structural concrete work with confidence.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the principles of concrete mix design and the factors affecting strength and durability.
  • Interpret reinforcement detailing drawings and bar bending schedules.
  • Select appropriate formwork systems for slabs, columns and walls.
  • Apply correct curing methods to prevent cracking and strength loss.
  • Recognise common concrete defects and recommend appropriate remedial action.
  • Describe the basic principles of precast and post tensioned construction.
