Commodity Price Risk and Hedging for Procurement Teams

Swings in the price of fuel, steel, grain and other commodities can wreck budgets for African organisations that buy in volume. This course equips procurement teams to understand and manage commodity price risk using contracting strategies and, where appropriate, financial hedging. The treatment is practical and aimed at buyers rather than traders.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the organisation's exposure to volatile commodity prices.
  • Read commodity markets and the drivers behind price movements.
  • Use contracting strategies such as fixed price and index linked deals.
  • Understand how forwards and other hedging instruments work in outline.
  • Weigh the costs and risks of hedging against leaving exposure open.
  • Work with finance and treasury to set a commodity risk approach.
