Combustible Dust and Explosion Hazard Management

Grain, sugar, flour, coal, wood and metal dusts can explode with devastating force when they accumulate and find an ignition source, a hazard that many operators underestimate. This course explains how dust explosions happen and how to prevent them through housekeeping, ignition control and explosion protection. Examples draw on mills, silos, food processing plants and mineral operations common across Southern and East Africa.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the conditions that allow a dust explosion and secondary explosions.
  • Identify combustible dusts and the equipment where they accumulate.
  • Control dust accumulation through housekeeping and extraction.
  • Eliminate or control ignition sources in dust-handling areas.
  • Apply explosion prevention and protection measures to plant and equipment.
  • Assess dust explosion risk and prioritise the highest-risk areas.
