Cold Storage and Refrigerated Environment Safety

Cold rooms, blast freezers and refrigerated warehouses that keep food and pharmaceuticals safe expose workers to cold stress, slippery floors and the risk of being locked inside a chamber. This course covers the specific hazards of working in refrigerated environments and how to control them. It reflects the cold chain operations found across food processing, logistics and distribution in warmer African climates where the temperature swing is severe.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the health effects of working in cold and refrigerated environments.
  • Control cold stress through clothing, rotation and warm up arrangements.
  • Manage ice, condensation and slippery surfaces inside chilled areas.
  • Prevent entrapment with door releases, alarms and lone worker checks.
  • Handle refrigerant leaks and oxygen displacement emergencies safely.
  • Plan safe work routines for extended shifts in cold storage.
