Bloodborne Pathogens and Biological Hazard Control

Workers who handle waste, provide first aid, clean facilities or care for others face exposure to blood, body fluids and other biological hazards that carry real infection risk. This course explains how pathogens are transmitted and how to break the chain through safe work practices, waste handling and post-exposure procedures. The content reflects the realities of clinics, waste operations and workplaces managing HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis exposure in the African context.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how bloodborne and other biological hazards are transmitted at work.
  • Assess tasks and roles for exposure to blood, body fluids and infectious material.
  • Apply standard precautions, safe sharps handling and correct protective equipment.
  • Manage the segregation, storage and disposal of biohazardous waste.
  • Carry out a post-exposure procedure and arrange prompt medical follow-up.
  • Train staff and maintain the records that support an exposure control plan.
