Alternative Building Technologies and Innovative Construction Materials

Housing backlogs and material costs are pushing African builders beyond brick and block toward faster and more affordable systems. This course surveys alternative building technologies and innovative materials, from lightweight panels and stabilised earth to modern hybrids, and how to build with them well. It helps delegates judge which systems suit a project and avoid the quality pitfalls that give new methods a bad name.

What you will be able to do

  • Compare mainstream and alternative building technologies.
  • Assess suitability of a system for a given project and climate.
  • Supervise construction with panel and lightweight systems.
  • Build with stabilised earth and compressed block methods.
  • Manage interfaces, finishes and services in alternative systems.
  • Address approval, durability and maintenance considerations.
